The Great Lakes Bay Mom Prom

How do 300 women have a great time and make a difference in their community?  They go to the prom – The Great Lakes Bay Mom Prom! The 4th annual Great Lakes Bay Mom Prom will take place on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Great Hall at Valley Plaza in Midland.  Mom Prom is a massive ladies night out; a chance for women 21 and older to dance the night away, eat, drink, pose for pictures and make new memories. Mom Prom is also a fun way to support an important cause, the mission of Family & Children’s Services of Mid-Michigan. Family and Children’s Services (FCS) is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian, multi service agency specializing in a wide variety of quality counseling and support services. FCS is unique in that they turn no one away, regardless of age, presenting concern, ability to pay or any other factor. “Mom Prom is at its simplest an event to help moms and families by making services accessible and affordable and reducing risk for the most vulnerable people in our community.” This year’s Mom Prom theme will be “A Red Carpet Affair”. Women 21 and over are invited to dig deep in the recesses of their closets for old prom and bridesmaid’s dresses or to hit the thrift shops to put together a look that will help them enjoy a night to remember.  From Hollywood glamour to men’s wear to bridal fashions to Lady Gaga’s meat dress or Bjork’s swan dress, has there ever been a better place to indulge a fashion fantasy than on the red carpet? The event will include welcome photo opportunities, a DJ and dance floor, appetizer, dessert and candy buffets, a cash bar, games with fabulous prizes, a green screen photo booth, a silent auction, and a raffle with a three-day visit for four to Disney World and $1,000 spending money as the prize! Tickets are $45 and are available online, on the Great Lakes Bay Mom Prom Facebook page,  and at Family & Children’s Services (1714 Eastman Ave, Midland, MI). Early bird pricing of $40 is available until January 24, but quantities are limited. Mom Prom is at its simplest an event to help moms and families by making services accessible and affordable and reducing risk for the most vulnerable people in our community.  Did you know that perinatal mood disorders are the most common but least discussed complication of childbirth?  Postpartum depression affects 1 in 7 women, but only 15% of women experiencing postpartum depression receive treatment. Untreated postpartum depression is associated with long-term negative consequences including impaired bonding of mothers and babies, toddlers who are more likely to have cognitive and developmental delays, older children with poorer self-control and more aggression and substance abuse in teens. Funds raised at Mom Prom can change lives, not just for moms, but for entire families by making treatment from a counselor with specialized training in perinatal mood disorders available at prices a women can afford. Family and Children’s Services is also there to help older children. The FCS Youth Services Program offers free, confidential counseling to teens aged 14 through 17 in their schools and at The Rock Center for Youth Development to help them find ways to work through concerns and develop decision making skills. Today’s teens are facing challenges that include depression, anxiety, loneliness, anger, grief and loss, relationship issues, sexuality, self-harm, substance use, divorce or blending of families, eating disorders, and bullying. “When you attend Mom Prom you aren’t just having the time of your life, you are helping to change lives, so order your tickets today and get ready to put on your dancing shoes for the biggest ladies’ night out of the year!” The ability to respond to meet the needs of teens can be crucial in reducing the risk of behaviors that can alter the course of a child’s life such as substance abuse, poor school performance or failure, involvement in the legal system, self-harm or even suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens in our country and nearly 3/4 of the students receiving FCS Youth Services in local schools report that they have had thoughts of self-harm or suicide. When you attend Mom Prom you aren’t just having the time of your life, you are helping to change lives, so order your tickets today and get ready to put on your dancing shoes for the biggest ladies’ night out of the year!
