The Great Lakes Bay Region knows how to do WINTER! The 2020 WINTER FAMILY GUIDE is a listing of all the child and family-friendly events coming up this season. Also included is a directory of OUTDOOR and INDOOR places to visit so your children can run, learn, and most of all have fun.

Come spend an hour learning about nature! The hour will include a story, crafts, time outdoors and other age-appropriate activities. Ages: 3-5 w/adult

Saturday, January 4 @ 10 AM – 12 PM: *FREESNOWSHOE SAMPLER @ Chippewa Nature Center (Midland)

It’s time to play outside! Drop by any time to give CNC’s snowshoes a try, do a winter scavenger hunt or warm up by a campfire. Meet at the Homestead Cabin and come enjoy a winter morning in the snow. All Ages, under 18 w/adult

Friday, January 10 @ 5 – 6 PM: *FREE *RSVPFULL MOON STROLL @ Chippewa Nature Center (Midland)

Walk through tree shadows under the light of the wolf moon. While no wolves live around CNC, we’ll look and listen for signs of other nocturnal wildlife. Wear dark clothing and bring a flashlight. Friday night under the lights of a full moon! Don’t give in to the winter blahs. Fight back by joining us on Friday, January 10th at 7:00 PM for a night hike at our Sylvan Solace Preserve.

Zehnder’s Snowfest 2020 will again dazzle and excite you with snow and ice sculptures created by professional ice and snow carvers from around the world. There will be entertainment for the entire family in the warming tent, a fireworks display, petting zoo and children’s activities.

Winter is a time to celebrate snow! Get into the spirit of the season with activities surrounding the solid state of water (even if there’s none on the ground!). Venture out to Chippewa Nature Center for the monthly Families in Nature program series! Join CNC’s naturalists for this outdoor program to explore the wonders of Michigan’s seasons. Sunday, February 9  at 2 PM: *FREE  – WIGWAM IN THE WINTER @ Chippewa Nature Center (Midland)

Drop by the wigwam to get a glimpse into what it was like for Ojibwa Indians to live in a wigwam along the Pine River several hundred years ago. You’ll have a chance to see some traditional tools used for hunting and preparing wild game, learn about the fur trade and see some plants used for making cordage and baskets. If there is enough snow, we’ll play a game of snow snakes outside. All Ages, under 18 w/adult.

Sunday, February 9  at 6 PM: *FREE  – FULL MOON STROLL (ages 9+) @ Chippewa Nature Center (Midland)

Enjoy a crisp winter walk under the light of the Snow Moon. We’ll look for signs of animals and enjoy the beauty of the woods after dark. Wear dark clothing and bring a flashlight. It’s free fishing weekend! This event focuses on getting families outdoors and exploring Michigan’s winter wonderland with a variety of fun activities and programs.

Sunday, February 16  at 10 – 11:30 AM: *FREE *RSVPSNOWSHOE HIKE @ Sylvan Solace Nature Preserve (Mt. Pleasant)

Explore Chippewa Watershed Conservancy’s Sylvan Solace by snowshoe. We will search for signs of wildlife and enjoy a winter morning as we explore this 78-acre preserve located just west of Mt. Pleasant. If conditions are unfavorable to snowshoe, we will enjoy a winter hike. Snowshoe availability is limited, so please register in advance.

Leprechaun Run takes place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the Dow Bay Area Family YMCA, 225 Washington, Bay City at 2:00 PM.  Day of Registration is 10:00 AM to 1:45 PM. If you are registering on Race Day, please arrive by 1:30 PM to avoid the last minute Rush.  The races will be held West of the YMCA on  Saginaw Street, Bay City close to 10th Street. Cost: $7.  RSVP LINK

Saturday, March 21, 10 AM – 4 PM: – MAPLE SYRUP DAY @ Chippewa Nature Center (Midland)

Start your day with a Pancake Meal, open to members only from 9-10 am for $7 (ages 13 and up), $4 (ages 3-12), under 3 free. The meal is open to the public from 10 am-2 pm: $8 (ages 13 and up), $5 (ages 3-12), under 3 free.  From 10 am to 4 pm, crafts, activities and demonstrations will take place at the Visitor Center, Homestead Farm, Log Schoolhouse, Sugarhouse and Sugarbush. In the Visitor Center, kids will love playing maple tree games and making crafts to take home. Stop by the wigwam to learn how Native American’s used the resources along the Pine River many years ago. Catch a haywagon ride to the Sugarhouse to see how CNC boils sap into maple syrup. You’ll also find an 1870’s sap boiling demonstration, Sugarbush tours and a tree-tapping activity. Visit the Log Schoolhouse and Cabin for a puppet show, crafts, and activities. $5/ adult
